Extendicare in Gerontology Scholarship

My path to nursing  was shaped by a deep-rooted passion for supporting older adults, particularly those living with dementia. This interest began during my undergraduate studies in gerontology at the University of Guelph and evolved as I worked as a recreation therapist and activity aide in long-term care (LTC) settings. Later, I worked at the Alzheimer Society. These experiences gave me a broader perspective on dementia care across various settings and inspired me to return to school to complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. So, I began my nursing journey in my mid-thirties when I was mom to three children under 5.

Today, I work as a Behavioural Supports Ontario Registered Nurse in a rural hospital, supporting patients with dementia-related responsive behaviours. I help develop person-centred behaviour care plans and coach staff in using alternative strategies to support patients such as music, reminiscing, and art. I’ve seen how these approaches humanize care and improve outcomes. Becoming a nurse has allowed me to combine my background in gerontology and recreation therapy with clinical skills to advocate for compassionate, person-centred dementia care.

The Extendicare in Gerontology Scholarship will assist me in completing my Master of Science in Nursing. My graduate thesis explores how nurses in acute care use activity-based interventions to support patients with dementia. I am extremely grateful to be selected for this scholarship and am proud to be a Canadian Nurses Foundation scholar. Thank you, Extendicare, for your generous support!
