Award Recipient

Simran Aujla

Eaton Award

As I reach the end of my nursing education and am granted this award, I want to reflect on what led me to pursue this career.

During the uncertainty throughout the application process, a moment of clarity came from my experiences within my community. As the daughter of immigrants, I witnessed firsthand the disparities in the development of chronic diseases due to various health inequities. I realized that what would fulfill me most would be acting as an intermediary within the healthcare system to help bridge this gap.

Nursing offers a holistic view of health, considering all social determinants when providing quality care. This perspective allows for a true connection and understanding of patients that will enable nurses to determine the root cause of their conditions.

Additionally, many of my personal attributes align well with the role of a nurse. Nursing requires constant critical thinking and evidence-based research and is a career that continuously evolves and adapts to new knowledge, which will keep my inquisitiveness challenged.

Most importantly, I am inspired by how nurses continuously advocate. Whether through health education, research, or leadership positions, nurses have the power to create change. I hope to be a change-maker in healthcare, inspired by both my community and the many nurses who came before me.
