There has been no one more influential in shaping my life’s path than my paternal grandmother, affectionately known as Granny. Granny was a registered nurse, who was born in Northern Ireland, where she completed her nursing education. She immigrated to Canada in 1984 and became the head of a household for pregnant teenage girls – a true testament to the fact that nurses can go anywhere and do anything. From her stories, it was incredibly clear that the mentorship she provided these young women at a very sensitive time in their lives was invaluable to their growth and mental well-being. I always wanted to be like Granny, so I decided to follow in her footsteps and become a RN. I embrace my role as a nurse and lead with a calm demeanor, providing constant positive affirmation to my colleagues. I take pride in mentoring nursing students, sharing my passion for reflective practice and fostering empathy. Nursing, for me, is not just a career; it is a calling that allows me to care for and support others in their time of need. In essence, my decision to become a nurse stems from Granny’s profound impact on my life. Her acceptance, compassion, and dedication have shaped my values and instilled in me a sense of purpose. I am proud to carry on her legacy and fulfill my “why” by making a difference in the lives of those I care for as a nurse.
