Margaret Munro Award
My name is Susan Poon and I will be entering my fourth and final year of undergraduate nursing at the University of Calgary. I first became interested in nursing in high school, where I volunteered at a community hemodialysis clinic in Calgary and heard many inspiring clinical stories from my two sisters, who are both nurses. After three years of studying nursing, I can truly see why nursing is such a fascinating career. As both a science and an art, nursing has allowed me to quench my thirst for knowledge about the human body and allowed me to meet and interact with a diverse range of interesting patients and co-workers alike. I love how nursing has expanded my mind and humbled me at the same time. I am passionate about nursing because it allows me to make a difference in the lives of many and the opportunity to work in so many different fields. Through my clinical practicums, work, and volunteering, I have been able to find my passion for pediatrics, maternity, community nursing, homelessness, and research. Upon graduating, I hope to work with homeless families on an individual and community basis, where I can be a part of the effort to eliminate homelessness in Canada. I want to thank the Canadian Nurses Foundation for giving me the financial assistance I need to finish my schooling, so that I can focus more on my studies and continue to participate in the extracurricular activities that I love so much.
