Military Nurses of Canada Award
Despite our technological advancements, the fundamental need for human connection in caregiving remains irreplaceable. My journey into nursing wasn’t sparked by childhood dreams but rather a profound realization in my twenties: physical human connection is crucial to our humanity.
I enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in 2003, specializing in radio and satellite communications. Despite finding satisfaction in my role and participating in numerous deployments aboard His Majesty’s Canadian Ships, I longed for a career change. In 2015, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and embarked on a new path as a Nursing Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces.
In my current role as a perioperative nurse, I feel privileged to serve a diverse patient population that includes military members, veterans, and civilians, both domestically and abroad. My passion lies in delivering exceptional care. The team-based nursing of the operating room provides a fast-paced skill-focused environment while applying critical thinking abilities which is essential for achieving positive patient outcomes.
What truly fuels my dedication is ensuring that every OR patient experiences comfort and compassion. There is a profound joy in holding a surgical patient’s hand and reassuring them with, “We will take very good care of you,” as they drift into sleep. These intimate moments define why I am committed to nursing for as long as I am able.
