Award Recipient

Waleed Janjoa

CIBC Nursing Bursary

My name is Waleed Janjoa, and I’m proud to be pursuing my nursing degree at University of Alberta.
Growing up, I witnessed firsthand how compassionate and skilled healthcare professionals can make an
incredible difference in people’s lives. This became even more personal when my younger brother was
diagnosed with cancer. Watching him bravely battle his illness, and seeing the way nurses cared for him,
not just medically but emotionally a lasting impression on me. It showed me the power of kindness,
advocacy, and presence during life’s hardest moments.

These experiences shaped my desire to enter a profession where I could provide that same level of care
and support to others. Nursing felt like a natural calling because it blends science, skill, and humanity in a
way that changes lives every single day.

As I work toward my goal of becoming a nurse, I’ve come to value the relationships nurses build with
patients and families deeply. I want to be the kind of nurse who listens, comforts, and
advocates—someone who sees the person beyond the illness.

Receiving this bursary from CNF and CIBC has been an incredible encouragement. It reminds me that
I’m part of a larger community that believes in the power of nursing to transform lives. I’m deeply
grateful for this support as I continue on this journey.
