Award Recipient

Jesse Whitehead

John Vanderlee Award

My current nursing experience is through my clinical placements at the University of British Columbia. A year in — and halfway through — I have been placed in geriatric rehab, maternity, paediatrics, medical, and surgical. In my previous career, I worked in a juvenile detention facility, and have professional aspirations to continue to work with this population. To this end, I hope to have opportunities during my upcoming community and mental health rotations to explore these possibilities further. Further, I hope to combine my previous career with my new one by pursuing a nursing position at the Burnaby Youth Custody Service Centre.

This Canadian Nurses Foundation award will help contribute to my academic success and nursing proficiency for the duration of my program. By helping to cover the logistics of living in Vancouver, I will be able to focus on my studies and pursue volunteer opportunities that will help further my career and community contributions once I finish school.
