Haylee Hansvall

Johnson & Johnson Award

Leaving a well-defined career path at a reputable biotechnology company to pursue a second degree was not a decision I made lightly. To determine if nursing could be a better fit for me, I began volunteering as a patient visitor at an inner city hospital in Vancouver. These interactions gave me a new perspective on the experience of illness and what determines health. I was inspired by the immense difference a nurse could make during challenging times. It became clear that as a nurse, I could combine my love for the health sciences with my desire to make honest human connections.

I am in my final year of the accelerated BSN program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. From addictions treatment to lung transplantation, my clinical experiences have shown me just how diverse the profession is and that I can excel in many different areas. Currently, I work as an employed student nurse on a surgical unit, where I’ve been expanding my knowledge of post-operative nursing. I find surgery truly fascinating. I enjoy laughing with my patients, answering their questions in a way that’s easy to understand, and encouraging them to be involved in their care.

I am honoured to receive the Johnson & Johnson award on behalf of the CNF. I take great pride in my commitment to continuous learning and ability to achieve an exceptionally high academic record, while working part-time throughout my program. I am extremely grateful to have the support of the CNF as I continue on this journey.
