Hunter Spendelow

CNSA Clinical Excellence Award

Hello! My name is Hunter and I’m graduating from Thompson Rivers University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in the year of 2024. For my passions outside of my career, I am a big outdoor enthusiast – rock climbing, snowboarding, and mountain biking are the things that I love to spend my time doing, so being able to work in a fast paced environment and use hands on skills is something that was necessary for me in a career path. I have a few nurses in my family who thankfully encouraged me into the direction of nursing and I couldn’t be more grateful. My favourite part of nursing is being able to create a connection with patients through listening to their stories, and building a relationship through understanding, empathy and kindness. Patients are incredibly vulnerable within the healthcare system and there is such an inherent imbalance of power between staff and clients, and I’m happy to be able to be a person who can make sure that people are looked after the way I would want to be looked after in the hospital. Nobody wants to be in the hospital, and I find great reward in being able to bring even a small amount of joy into someone’s day when joy can be hard to find. Its been a struggle trying to study to my full capabilities while trying to balance work on top of it, so I’m very grateful for this scholarship to ease some of the financial burden of university. Thank you so much.
