TD Aboriginal Nursing Award – Master’s

I have been a nurse for 15 years. I am presently enrolled in the Master of Nursing program with Athabasca University. I have always believed in the importance of education and have sought opportunities throughout my career to enhance my own professional development. I presently work as a nurse with an outpatient program where I provide education to clients to help them self-manage chronic illness.

I am grateful to TD and the Canadian Nurses Foundation for their generous financial support. It warms my heart to know that they believe in my ability and support my educational endeavours. I have decided on a teaching focus in my graduate nursing program. The curriculum within this program provides comprehensive knowledge about teaching and learning in health settings. The program will provide me with knowledge and skill to teach clients to better manage their chronic illness. Through education about self management, clients are given the tools necessary to live active healthy lives in the face of chronic illness. My goal as a nurse and as a person is to help people. I believe that patient education is the key.  As they say, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”
