Frances Mary Stoddart Award
I am currently entering my fourth year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Vancouver Island University. Many of my family members have practiced as nurses, and I have always admired the care and devotion they gave to their jobs. The past three years of school have taught me a lot about what it means to be a nurse, and I feel extremely privileged to have entered a profession that aims to better the lives of others. I have always loved to help people, and as a career I feel that nursing has fit well with my skill set.
When I graduate I hope to gain as much experience in my first years as possible, with the goal of one day specializing as a perinatal nurse. I have always loved the idea of working with mothers and babies, and seeing perinatal nurses at work in the hospital gave me such an appreciation for the unique skill set needed to support these women. Building relationships with patients, supporting and empowering them are some of my favorite aspects of the profession, and I look forward to bringing these skills to all areas of my future practice.
